Mahatma Gandhi's grandson appeals for international help for flood-ravaged Pak

Professor Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi has pitched in for international help for the flood-victims in Pakistan.

Financial and material aid need to be increased, as millions of Pakistanis have been struck by the disaster, the Daily Times quoted Gandhi, as saying in a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York.

Praising the "bravery" of the flood victims, he said that India and Pakistan could take this natural calamity as an opportunity to demolish the "walls of hatred" between themselves.

Gandhi welcomed the aid extended by the Indian government and hoped that more help would pour in from the Indian government as well as the people.

Gandhi is a research professor at University of Illinois in Chicago, US.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Ambassador to the UN, Abdullah Hussain Haroon said that since the scale of destruction was massive and one-fifth of Pakistan was still submerged in water, Pakistan needed immediate international help for the rehabilitation of the flood victims.

"What you are seeing now is the tip of iceberg, the worst is yet to come," Haroon added. (ANI)
